Questions for a Drugged Society

What happens when what is right can no longer be done because it has been rendered impractical?

What if, for instance, it were wrong to think that a government should be the source for the validation of the love and commitment between any two people? (It is wrong to think that, isn't it?) But what if that validation were the only way to assure certain benefits and rights?

That's what I would call being trapped by an overcomplicated machine; that's what I would call being smashed between the wheels of bureaucracy.

And what do we do when we are unjustly trapped? What have humans always done in these circumstances? The answer is bloody and profound.

The real question is: When will it happen? (Or, are we too drugged with the opiate of "the way it is" to ever see it happen?)

  1. What if your government gives you every single right and benefit, but not the actual exact same name for the agreement that binds, because some (mostly older) people in your society are not yet ready for that change, but you won't accept that sometimes you have to be kind and patient and instead you still clamour and moan and insist that all those boring elderly people with stupid attitudes deserve no respect, because your demands are much more pressing?

    1. Right, Z -- another interesting perspective on it. I hate when people try to make this sound like a simple issue and all who disagree be damned. Respect for traditional views is definitely lacking. In fact, my next post was going to be about the plethora of "tolerance" in this country and the real lack of "respect." Great minds...

  2. I suppose the problem with my argument is knowing when is the right time - you cannot insist on patience indefinitely, but on the issue of gay rights things have moved very fast already recently and a small pause for breath might do more for the cause than overeager insistence which could come across like bullying

    1. But even considering that now might not be the right time simply becuase one has worked up a head of steam, would certainly be a step in the right direction, for sure.
